Driving the advancement of clinical microbiology—Deer in Action.
The clinical microbiology laboratory is the weakest link in most hospital laboratories and represents a major bottleneck to their development. It embodies the tension between the need for rapid result reporting in clinical diagnosis and the time‑consuming nature of conventional microbial culture; the conflict between the requirement for independent financial accountability and the high costs of imported microbiological equipment and consumables; the contradiction between national policies aimed at curbing the overuse of antibiotics and the long‑standing practice of empiric prescribing by clinicians, coupled with a hospital‑centric model that relies on drug revenues to sustain operations; the disparity between grassroots hospitals’ demand for cutting‑edge microbiological diagnostic technologies and the shortage of skilled personnel and lack of expertise in this field; and, indeed, many other such challenges.
